How to Clean a Mattress | A Step-by-Step Guide to Mattress Cleaning Made Easy
Giving your mattress a deep-clean every six months not only keeps it fresh but also helps protect your investment. Here’s what you’ll need for mattress cleaning:
- Vacuum cleaner
- Baking Soda
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Clear Liquid Dish Soap
- Large Spray Bottle
- White Rags or Cleaning Cloths
- Rubber Gloves
- Mattress Protector (optional)
First, remove the sheets and any coverings like mattress pads or toppers. Then, vacuum the mattress thoroughly using a brush attachment or a handheld vacuum. Next, shake a generous amount of baking soda onto the mattress to absorb excess liquids and odours. Spread it around evenly, letting it sit for at least an hour, and then thoroughly vacuum the mattress.
If you’ve got significant stains, just using baking soda alone may not be enough. In that case, combine seven ounces of hydrogen peroxide, three tablespoons of baking soda, and one teaspoon of clear dish soap in a large bottle. Shake it well and then spray this mixture liberally on each stain. If necessary, give the area a light scrub, and then blot with a clean damp cloth until the stain is gone.
Now is also an ideal time to let the mattress air out. Fresh air and sunshine can help neutralise unwelcome organisms that can cause odours, like mould and bacteria. While the bedding is off, flip and rotate the mattress. This not only helps it stay cleaner longer but can also minimise daily wear and tear.
Now that your mattress is clean and fresh, keep it that way by encasing it in a high-quality mattress protector.
